Nov 30, 2021 · Seagate Hard Drive Beeping and BitLocker Encryption. Our engineers examined the client’s beeping Seagate hard drive in our class-100 cleanroom lab. As we usually see in hard drive beeping situations, the read/write heads had become mangled. The platters had also sustained some damage, spreading dust across their surfaces. This hard drive has its own internal setting for spinning down after inactivity. It was set to never, but using a special Seagate tool I changed it to 1 hour to see if that would make a difference. But it didn't. It still spins down after exactly 3 minutes. I am already using the "High performance" power plan. Take for instance all the new Seagate consumer non-NAS drives with 2400 hour ratings.... My newest UnRAID server is set to not spin down (I don't plan to leave it that way, but have been using it a lot lately, and don't like the 10-15 second delays ]... and it's drives are all between 31 & 33 (WD Reds). It hits 35-36 during parity checks.

Seagate ST2000 2TB SATA HDD - Media After configuring Windows 10 to sleep the media HDD (the seagate) after 5 mins of inactivity I noticed that it never actually does it, the HDD never goes to sleep, spins down.... In short the approved Windows 10 drivers from version 14 and above have a bug that prevents the standard HDD spin down in Windows. So I booted into Windows, downloaded the Seagate Dashboard and changed the Spin-Down-Time for the drive. Now the drive spins down correctly even under Linux. After completing the steps in the Forum (blacklisting a USB device) even SMART works for me. Just felt like I should share this here in case somebody is in the same situation as me. The drive must be connected directly to the computer's USB or Firewire port to ensure that the spin-down command is sent to the drive. Do not connect the drive to a USB or Firewire port on the computer monitor, the keyboard, or a USB hub. Confirm that the Windows power settings are properly configured. For Windows 7/Vista/XP.

You could ask SeaGate to confirm whether you need to do a firmware update on your disks. If you need to update the firmware, I would backup your data first (if possible), power down, remove disks (label order), connect the disk to a SATA port on your PC and check the disk using vendor tools.
